NHS Cervical Screening Programme
The NHS Cervical Screening Programme is transitioning to a digital-first approach, aiming to improve accessibility and efficiency. This includes a new system for invitations and reminders, making it easier for individuals to book appointments and access information. The practice encourages all patients to download the NHS App and to turn on notifications: www.nhs.uk/nhs-app/
The initial stage will be invitations only using the NHS App. Results of cervical smears will not be sent yet via the App or Text. Anyone who doesn’t read the NHS app message or where an SMS can’t be delivered (including those people without a recorded mobile phone number) will have a letter sent as a failsafe. All invites will still direct people to book in the usual way.
The goal is to make screening invitations more convenient, quicker, and cost-effective. This is a step toward a more accessible, agile, and participant-focused service.
